Automatic trip recording: for the most reliable background recording, allow Location access set to Always, enable Precise Location, keep Automatic Trip Recording enabled, and avoid force-quitting the app while you want automatic detection active.

Quick troubleshooting

A trip did not start automaticallyCheck iPhone Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services → Auto Logbook. Location should be set to Always and Precise Location should be enabled. Then open Auto Logbook once to re-arm automatic trip monitoring.

A trip is missing from the mapAutomatic trips use recorded GPS route points. A manually entered trip can display an estimated route when its start and end locations can be found. If a location cannot be resolved, enter the trip distance manually.

iCloud sync is not workingConfirm that you are signed in to iCloud on the iPhone and that iCloud Drive is available. In Auto Logbook, open More → iCloud backup → Sync now. The app shows a success or failure message after the attempt.

Can I edit a trip?Yes. Automatic recording is designed to reduce manual work, but trips, Work / Private classification, odometer details, jobs and expenses can still be reviewed and corrected.

Can I keep personal and business records separate?Yes. Individual and Business / ABN record owners are maintained separately, including their vehicles, trips, jobs, expenses and accountant exports.

Tax-time exports

Auto Logbook can prepare English PDF, CSV, Excel and Accountant Pack exports from the records stored in the app. Always review your records before relying on them for tax purposes.

This Privacy Policy explains how Auto Logbook for ATO ("Auto Logbook", "the app") handles information when you use the app.

Privacy-first design: core records are stored on your iPhone. Auto Logbook does not operate its own account or trip-tracking server. Optional backup uses your private Apple iCloud / CloudKit account.

1. Information the app may process

Vehicle and profile information, such as record owner name, Business / ABN details you choose to enter, vehicle year, make, model, registration, fuel/powertrain, body type and odometer readings.
Location and route information, including precise location, trip start/end locations, route points, trip distance and times, when automatic or manual trip features are used.
Trip and work information, including Work / Private classification, jobs, work sites, notes and related trip records.
Expense and receipt information, including amounts, categories, merchant details, dates and receipt images you choose to add.
Odometer evidence, including readings and photos you choose to save.

2. How information is used

Information is used to provide app functionality, including automatic trip detection, route maps, logbook calculations, ATO-readiness checks, odometer tracking, expense records, tax-time exports and backup/restore features.

3. Location data and background recording

Auto Logbook may request Always Location access because automatic trip detection is a core feature. When enabled, iOS location services can provide location events while the app is in the background so the app can detect driving, record routes and finish trips automatically. You can disable automatic recording or change location permission at any time in the app or iPhone Settings.

4. Local storage

Core app records are stored locally on your device using Apple platform storage technologies. Deleting the app may remove locally stored data that has not been backed up elsewhere.

5. iCloud / CloudKit backup

If you enable iCloud backup and iCloud is available, Auto Logbook can store a backup in your private Apple iCloud / CloudKit account. Auto Logbook does not provide a separate developer-operated cloud account for your logbook data.

6. Photos and OCR

If you add receipt or odometer photos, the app accesses only the images you choose to provide or capture for those features. Text recognition may be performed using Apple device frameworks to help extract information from selected images.

7. Advertising, tracking and sale of data

Auto Logbook does not contain third-party advertising and is not designed to track you across other companies' apps or websites. We do not sell your trip, location or logbook information to advertisers.

8. Exports and sharing

When you create and share a PDF, CSV, Excel workbook or Accountant Pack, the export may contain the vehicle, trip, location, job, expense, odometer and evidence information included in your records. You control where these files are shared using the iOS share sheet or other actions you initiate.

9. Personal and Business / ABN records

The app lets you maintain separate record owners. The app is designed to keep Individual records and Business / ABN records separate within the app and in generated exports.

10. Data retention and deletion

You control the records stored in the app. Records can be edited or removed through app features. Local data can also be removed by deleting the app. If you have enabled iCloud backup, a backup may remain in your private iCloud account until it is replaced or removed through applicable Apple/iCloud controls or app functionality.

11. Children

Auto Logbook is intended as a vehicle and record-keeping utility and is not directed to children.

12. Security

We use Apple platform security and storage mechanisms available to the app. No software or storage method can guarantee absolute security, so users should also protect their iPhone and Apple Account with appropriate device and account security settings.

13. Changes to this policy

This policy may be updated as Auto Logbook changes. The effective date at the top of this page will be updated when material changes are made.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Auto Logbook free?Yes. The current individual app is offered free of charge, with automatic trip recording, maps and tax-time exports available without a subscription.

Does Auto Logbook send my trips to its own server?No developer-operated Auto Logbook server is required for your core logbook records. Core records stay on the iPhone, with optional private iCloud / CloudKit backup.

Does the app lodge anything with the ATO?No. The app prepares records and exports only. You or your accountant/tax professional decide how to use them.

Do I have to keep the app open while driving?No. With the required permissions enabled, automatic trip recording is designed to operate in the background. For best reliability, do not force-quit the app while you want automatic monitoring active.
